Samuel Ogualu: A Journey from Soccer to Rugby

Samuel Ogualu’s journey into the world of rugby is a tale of determination, inspiration, and a quest to uplift his family. Beginning in March of this year, Samuel made the bold choice to switch sports after years of dedication to soccer. "I knew I had to find a way to make sure my parents and the rest of my family were sorted, and that I would end the suffering of finances," he shares, reflecting a maturity beyond his 18 years. This decision was not made lightly; it was fueled by a desire to create a brighter future for his loved ones.

Inspiration from Siya Kolisi

The inspiration for Samuel’s new path in rugby comes from none other than Siya Kolisi, the esteemed captain of the South African rugby team. Kolisi’s remarkable rise from humble beginnings resonates deeply with Samuel, igniting a passion that drives him onto the field. "Seeing someone achieve greatness from such a background motivates me to do the same," he notes. This connection highlights the power of representation in sports and how heroes can impact aspiring athletes.

Joining Diggers Rugby Club

Joining Diggers Rugby Club marked a significant milestone in Samuel’s rugby journey. “Diggers Rugby is the best rugby club. They are a family, not just a team of individuals,” he declares with pride. Currently part of the U19 team, Samuel feels a strong sense of belonging. “They make me feel accepted. I depend on them, and they depend on me,” he emphasizes, showcasing the camaraderie that defines the club and elevates his spirit in the sport.

Commitment and Hard Work

Samuel’s commitment to rugby is palpable in his rigorous training schedule. With two club practices on Tuesdays and Thursdays and regular gym sessions at Virgin Active Northgate, his weeks are packed with preparation. “We usually have a game on Saturdays,” he explains, illustrating how every day brings a new opportunity to grow. For Samuel, rugby transcends the realm of sport; it is intertwined with his identity. His faith plays a crucial role in his mental fortitude, as he often turns to prayer for strength. “When I pray, I feel like I can do anything. The verse I use is Philippians 4:13,” he reveals.

Overcoming Setbacks

Samuel’s burgeoning talent has already attracted attention. He recently trialled for the Lions Rugby Club’s Inter-Provincial Team, a significant stepping stone in his career. Though he narrowly missed out on selection, his resilience shines through, stating confidently, “I will go again next year.” This determination exemplifies Samuel’s mindset. His ultimate goal is to join a rugby institute next year, aiming to become a professional player within five years.

His journey has not been devoid of challenges. A recent injury was a major hurdle, yet it only served to fortify his resolve. “It really upset me, but I came back stronger than before. Now, I’m ready for what’s ahead,” he shares. His focus on improving his scrumming further illustrates his dedication to mastering the nuances of the game. “I want my scrumming to be top tier – that would make me an immovable object,” he asserts, a testament to his commitment to continuous improvement.

Life Beyond Rugby

Outside of rugby, Samuel finds joy in gaming and spending time with friends. Balancing the demands of school with his sporting aspirations can be challenging, but these moments of relaxation provide him with a much-needed respite. Importantly, rugby has imparted vital life lessons that extend beyond the pitch. “Rugby has taught me that anyone can do anything as long as you set your mind to it,” he reflects, underscoring the sport’s role in shaping his outlook on life.

Advice for Aspiring Athletes

In his journey as a newcomer in rugby, Samuel has faced skepticism from others. To those who doubt their abilities or encounter obstacles in their pursuits, he has words of encouragement: “Don’t give up. Me being the new guy, and also someone who just started, people doubted me… But that didn’t change the fact that I was able to do what I love doing the most: playing rugby. So, just keep pushing and praying, anything is possible.” His message is not only about perseverance but also about the power of hope and faith in achieving one’s dreams.

With each passing day, Samuel Ogualu continues to chase his rugby dreams with unyielding passion, faith, and determination, setting the stage for a promising future both on and off the field.
