VTScoop’s Virginia Tech Football MVP Highlights: Week 5
Welcome back to the latest edition of VTScoop’s Virginia Tech Football MVP! Each week, our dedicated team of writers engages in spirited discussions to nominate the standout Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week. Our goal is to celebrate the athletes who shine on the field, culminating in an MVP for the season based on cumulative votes. This week’s session had some lively debates, especially following Virginia Tech’s narrow defeat against the No. 7 Miami Hurricanes.
The Close Call Against Miami
Virginia Tech’s encounter in Coral Gables was more than just another game—it was a heart-pounding contest that could have ended in victory for the Hokies. Their last-minute Hail Mary attempt, which was initially called a touchdown, became a polarizing topic for fans and analysts alike when it was ultimately overturned. The controversial call sparked numerous discussions but overshadowed what many considered one of the Hokies’ most complete performances under head coach Brent Pry. Despite the disappointment, the team showcased growth, resilience, and glimpses of brilliance from several players.
Offensive MVP Nominations
Amber Marie:
This week, I’m going to veer away from the obvious choice and shine a light on wide receiver Ayden Greene. I admit that I was ready to declare Greene’s time in the game over after a particularly tough drop led to a Miami interception. However, Greene turned my skepticism around. His ability to adapt during the game was remarkable, making crucial catches, including a stunning touchdown in the fourth quarter. This performance marks Greene’s best showing so far this season and serves as a testament to his potential.
Andrew Alix:
For me, the Offensive MVP this week is running back Bhayshul Tuten. Tuten is on a trajectory for Virginia Tech folklore. Midway through Friday’s game, I expressed my belief that Tuten might just be one of the greats in Hokies history. His dominance on the field was evident yet again as he delivered an impressive performance, solidifying his status as the centerpiece of the offense.
Doug Bowman:
I too will echo the sentiments regarding Bhayshul Tuten. Tuten is relentless, and despite being a warrior with some challenges, he has been consistently producing. Tuten’s four straight 100-yard rushing games tie him with Khalil Herbert’s 2020 record. His rise to becoming one of Virginia Tech’s all-time greats feels imminent.
Evan G. Watkins:
While Tuten continues to steal the spotlight, Kyron Drones deserves recognition for his improved performance. The Hokies thrived with Tuten at the helm, averaging over seven yards per carry and presenting a new layer of versatility that defenses struggle to cover.
Kolby Crawford:
I have to keep it simple: I’m with Tuten. “Tugboat” has proven to be a vital asset this season, continuing to stand out week after week.
Matej Sis:
It seems we’re all aligned here. Tuten has showcased elite running back capabilities, and alongside him, playmakers like Drones and Greene have shown promise, hinting at an exciting future for the Hokies’ offense.
Defensive MVP Nominations
Amber Marie:
For Defensive MVP, I’m going with linebacker Kaleb Spencer. Although I considered giving the nod to Mose Phillips for his thrilling interception, Spencer displayed everything we have been waiting to see from him. With three solo tackles, a tackle for loss, a pass breakup, and an interception, it feels like he has finally found his rhythm at the right moment in the season.
Andrew Alix:
I am in total agreement here, selecting Aeneas Peebles as my Defensive MVP. His experience and presence were felt strongly on the field, demonstrating the kind of performance the Hokies expected when they brought him in. Peebles excelled in the trenches, proving himself to be a force against a challenging Miami offensive line.
Doug Bowman:
I back the choice of Spencer wholeheartedly. His growth has been dramatic, particularly in this game against his former team. He stepped up in crucial moments, showcasing his skills and positioning him for more playtime moving forward.
Evan G. Watkins:
I would also affirm that Aeneas Peebles had an exceptional outing. He created significant pressure, delivering four quarterback hurries and a sack, making it difficult for Miami’s offense to find their rhythm.
Kolby Crawford:
I’m also lining up with Spencer. His impactful return to Miami was nothing short of impressive, especially considering the injury struggles within the linebacking corps. This showcases his potential to secure more playing time.
Matej Sis:
I’ll stick with Kaleb Spencer once again. His presence was palpable throughout the game, and he appears to be making all the right strides in his development.
